Fall Into Reading Challenge!

Hi all:

Katrina over at Callapidder Days (cute name, huh?) is running a fun new challenge called "Fall Into Reading."

Click here for all the details of the challenge, but the basics if you want to participate are:

  1. Publish the list of books you want to read this Fall on your website.
  2. Link it back to the central "Fall Into Reading Challenge" site.
  3. Read, read, read.
  4. Keep in touch.
  5. At the end of the challenge (12/21/06), compare notes to see how we all did!

This sounds great to me. Count me in.

Here's my list:

Nonfiction (library books all):

I’ve read articles by Frederica Mathewes-Green in Books & Culture, Christianity Today, and Beliefnet for years and have been wanting to check out her books on Orthodoxy. So I got these three through Interlibrary Loan (great program that!):

Facing East: A Pilgrim's Journey into the Mysteries of Orthodoxy 1997
At the Corner of East and Now: A Modern Life in Ancient Christian Orthodoxy 2000
The Open Door: Entering the Sanctuary of Icons and Prayer 2003

The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Francis S. Collins 2006
Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields 2006

Fiction:

All but Bev Lewis are review assignments – I’ll update my blog with links to the posted reviews as they appear.

Violet Dawn by Brandilyn Collins
Stranded by Lorena McCourtney
Acts of the Spirit (graphic novel) by Robert James Luedke
Hazardous Duty by Christy Barritt
Waking Lazarus by T.L. Hines
Relentless by Robin Parrish
Judas Unchained by Peter F. Hamilton
The Preacher’s Daughter by Beverly Lewis
(Vote for Bev at the Quills Awards for Best Romance and Book of the Year! Hurry 'cause voting ends 9/30/06 ...)

Any one else game? Here's the sign-up page for the Fall Into Reading Challenge!

Sign up by Sunday, September 24 to be eligible for an amazon gift certificate ...

Enjoy!

Hey--I'm from CT, too! I'll bet that Mystic Seaport was a fun place to work.

I linked your post onto Katrina's link wizard. I hope that's okay. If not, I can delete it.

Great list, Heather! I've heard good things about "Mockingbird." And I am VERY curious about Robin Parrish's Relentless. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on both of them. Thanks for participating and for spreading the word!

Hi Jennifer:

Oh yeah, the Seaport was great! I was working on 2 grants from the Library of Congress and Mellon Foundation scanning and transcribing historical sea documents, such as charts, captain's logs, captains' wives' diaries, etc. Lunchtime was great, I'd go sit by the water, watch the boats docking, and listen to the interpreters telling their tales of the sea. Alas, the grants came to an end ...

Have you been able to visit the Seaport? It's a great place for families.

Sure it's okay for you to link my Fall Into Reading blog to Katrina's site. I thought I had, but I guess I did it wrong??

Anyhoo, thanks for fixing it. Happy Reading! :)

Hi Katrina:

No prob! Thanks for the contest. What a great idea. Anything that gives us an excuse to read AND gives us opportunity to share great reads is a good thing in my book. :)

Thanks for the alert about voting for Beverly Lewis's book -- I love her writing!

I haven't heard of many of these -- will be interesting to read your reviews.

Hi Barbara H and Stephanie:

Yep, if you're at all interested in the Amish way of life, Bev Lewis's books are the way to go! I've read 4 or 5 of them - though I confess not The Preacher's Daughter, which didn't stop me voting for it. :) I have a copy now and plan to read it forthwith!!

I sure hope she wins the Quills Best Romance. Of course, Book of the Year would be great, too!

Hi Jane:

To Kill a Mockinbird is one of my all-time favorites - book and movie - so I'm mucho curious to read the biography of this woman who decided to write no more! At least not for publication ...

Enjoy your fall reading, too!
